Module description

This is an independent research module for final-year BA Sociology students. It gives you a thorough grounding in independent research skills before leading you towards your original dissertation project. This represents the culmination of your learning about ways to engage with and research the social world, allowing you to further explore insights learned on your specific programme pathway.

You will use and refine the research approaches introduced in modules in Years 1 to 2. This module will provide you with a clear understanding of what is at stake within qualitative research, including questions of method, and give you the ability to use your skills to research, present and make conclusions about the particular topic or issue that is the subject of your dissertation.

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • demonstrate your learning of a range of approaches and methods appropriate to either the Science and Technology pathway or the Global Sociology pathway
  • implement your learning through the design and execution of a piece of research
  • present your research findings in an appropriate form of output.
