Module description

In this module you will have the opportunity to produce a substantial piece of original written work exploring, in-depth, a relevant topic of your own interest, prepared under the guidance of a supervisor. The final work will:

  • contain an appropriate agreed research question
  • contain a comprehensive review of the pubic body of knowledge relevant to the question
  • include an evaluation of arguments and available evidence
  • be written and presented in the form of a paper ready for submission to a peer-reviewed journal.

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • identify relevant sources of material
  • evaluate the selected material competently
  • reach balanced conclusions, and where possible give their implications for wider theoretical issues and practical problems
  • identify the limitations and possible areas for development within the public body of knowledge pertaining to the problem under investigation
  • situate an extended specialist argument within a broader theoretical context
  • develop and present an argument
  • present your research in a written format appropriate for publication in a peer-reviewed journal
  • demonstrate independent and critical thinking about an agreed problem
  • manage your own learning
  • work independently.
